General tourist information
Sights of Ferwerderadiel
- At Birdaard it is worthwhile to visit the Ruurd Wiersma house. As a naive painter he decorated his entire house with the most exciting paintings.
The windmill is close to the Ruurd Wiersmahûs. This mill, the Swallow ("de Zwaluw" in Dutch) was built in 1841 and is still operational: milling grain and sawing wood - The Church museum at Jannum houses a collection of sarcophagus from the 11st centuary.
- In Marrum an outstanding monument by Ids Willemsma commemorates the fact that 66 km of dyke was brought to the required safety level between 1963 and 1993.
- The Medieval Churches
Walking .....
The coastal area is exceptional for walking! - There is the long route "Friese Kustpad": a 152 km trail along the coast from Stavoren to Lauwersoog. This is part of the North Sea Trail
- Shorter stretches are the HISTORIC WALKING TRACKS in the region.
All information is available at the Tourist Information Centres (VVV).
....and cycling
Cycling is the most popular way of public transport in the Netherlands. We use the bicycle for going to school, to the office or for our leisure time. Not surprising there are so many touristic routes:
- The most well-known is the "Elfstedenroute", passing through the 11 towns of Friesland and about 200 km long.
- Throughout North East Friesland there is the cycle paths network: a system of numbered crossing points, connecting all villages.
- Locally there is the Bartlehiemer
cycle tour passing by the majority of above mentioned sights of Ferwerderadiel.
All information is available at the Tourist Information Centres (VVV).
The Dutch Shallows
- The open space of the North Friesland Wetlands is something to experience: a curiosity in the Netherlands. There is a huge wealth of birds and salt-loving plants. A visit to this special area is worthwhile, and can be arranged through the De Seedykster Toer at Marrum.
- Ameland is the nearest island and therefore ideal for a one-day beach experience. The crossing from Holwerd takes only 45 minutes.
